Position Summary

The Federal Program Team Outreach and Marketing Director is accountable for overseeing all internal and external outreach and communications for the Federal Initiative to Govern for Racial Equity. This role is responsible for managing an outreach and communications plan activities and building external relationships with the organization`s constituencies, and will work with Race Forward`s Media Relations Manager on media relations. The Outreach and Marketing Director develops a proactive outreach and communications strategy and ensures messaging is consistent and engaging. The Outreach and Marketing Director is integral for developing the reputation of the Federal Initiative which represents the newest program of Race Forward. Advancing racial equity at the federal level is a landmark endeavor and highly visible. The Outreach and Marketing Director will identify and capitalize on opportunities to promote and positively represent the work of the federal team, and they will liaise with Race Forward`s Vice-President of Strategic Communications and Public Engagement to ensure alignment. The Outreach and Marketing Director will serve as an internal advisor for staff on strategies and best practices that lead to ideal results.

Duties and Responsibilities

Works under the direction of the Deputy Director of Federal Strategies to:

  • Devise and implement outreach and marketing strategies for advancing the goals of the Federal Initiative to Govern for Racial Equity.
  • In partnership with Race Forward`s Media Relations Manager, form relationships with reporters and media outlets for the purpose of securing news coverage on the Federal Initiative to Govern for Racial Equity and federal level efforts to transform agencies through a racial equity lens.
  • Explores issues that may be politically sensitive and complex in nature, then take the lead with preparing strategic responses.
  • Tracks newsworthy developments and progress of federal partners who are working to advance racial equity.
  • Creates, edit, and publish a bi-monthly e-newsletter on the Federal Initiative to Govern for Racial Equity.
  • Proposes and implements communications solutions that elevate the narrative of the Federal Initiative to Govern for Racial Equity as well as how it contributes to problem-solving within an increasingly crowded "marketplace of ideas," including blogs, videos, media statements, social media strategies, interviews, panels, case studies and public appearances.
  • Drafting and/or editing announcements on the Federal Initiative and work in cooperation with Race Forward`s Strategic Communications and Public Engagement team concerning the release of announcements.
  • Developing an annual report that summarizes the progress of the federal initiative.
  • Conferring with representatives of government agencies, strategic partners and others as required by project assignments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

To perform successfully in this role, incumbent should possess skills and abilities identified below:

  • Ability to problem solve, including overcoming obstacles and think creatively to develop a variety of solutions.
  • Ability to manage e-newsletter publishing in IContact; Constant Contact; or similar provider.
  • Ability to work with Race Forwards strategic communication department to pitch stories and ideas to media outlets in order to improve visibility of the Federal Initiative.
  • Ability to develop a social media strategy to ensure the Federal Initiative is viewed in a positive light.
  • Ability to maintain media lists, media coverage reports, and media clips in partnership with Race Forward`s strategic communication department.
  • Ability to multitask and manage time efficiently.
  • Strong knowledge of current affairs in the racial equity sector and role of the federal government therein.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to engage diverse stakeholders across the federal government.
  • Knowledge of the structure and practices within federal agencies strongly preferred.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education or experience commensurate to 10+ years of work in the fields of communications, marketing, consultation, public information, or public policy.
  • Knowledgeable of how to create interest and demand in new approaches and strategies to advance racial justice.
  • Experience pitching stories and ideas to media outlets.
  • Experience carrying out media campaigns and drafting timely statements to critical or sensitive issues.
  • Experience working with teams and effective cultivating of relationships.
  • Experience tracking performance results and capable of analyzing effectiveness to ensure communications strategies are working.
  • Experience publishing fact sheets, reports, case studies and summaries that are useful for start-up campaigns.
  • Experience in graphic design is preferred, but not required.

Additional Information

This position requires long periods of time at a desk on a computer up to 8 hours daily. This position will travel up to quarterly when safe to do so. Additional travel as necessary.
